Wanting

Wanting

By Aileen McPherson

As a child I wanted many things, but all paled

In comparison to the want and longing for a home,

A home full of love, a home that was mine, freedom

To live a peaceful quite life, with a partner who loved

Me, and a family furry or human it mattered not, so long

As love, kindness, and caring were the foundation.

Secondary wants were to be educated, full of knowledge, to

Know my rights as an individual, seeking safety, learning

Through life lessons taught, while one day seeking

Strength to help others learn by example instead of forceful undoing.

Wants I have learned can change, replaced either by

Needs pure, or doors closed, so in time you merely

Endure, letting go of old beliefs held as truths, acknowledging

Some wants become needs, while other needs are merely misplaced wants.
